PSNI Equality On Target

The security minister has told parliament catholic representation in the PSNI is "on target".

Catholic numbers in the PSNI have continued to increase due to the positive discrimination policy, which favours the recruitment of Catholic applicants who were historically heavily underrepresented.

Security Minister, Paul Goggins, told the house the 30% target for Catholic recruits is on target, rising from 8.3% in 1998, to 23.71% in February 2008.

The minister also reminded the house that the St Andrews Agreement made it clear 50-50 police recruitment would slow when the 30% level was reached.

Mr Goggins said that since 2001 the PSNI had received more than 80,000 applications from all sections of the community.

"This figure reflects the fact that there is a new generation who are ready to commit to a career in the PSNI and emphasises that confidence in our new policing structures is rising," he said.

The policy was an intrinsic part of the 1998 Good Friday agreement and was formulated under the Patten report.
