Man arrested after armed robbery

One man has been arrested following an armed robbery at a petrol station in north Belfast last night.

At around 9pm, two men armed with a knife and a handgun entered the petrol station on the Doagh Road in Mossley, Newtownabbey, and demanded money. They threatened a member of staff and were given a small amount of cash.

A customer who then came into the petrol station challenged the robbers. One of robbers attempted to escape and jumped over the fence of a neighbouring property but was caught and held until the police arrived.

The second man ran to a nearby car, which had two men on board, and fled the area.

Police later found the car abandoned on Klondyk Street, near the Shankill Road, where they recovered a knife and a blank-firing handgun.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
