Family dispute sees Co Down heiress sent to jail

The Co Down heiress who refused to comply with a court order to return £250,000 worth of antiques to her family is today starting the second day of a 14-day prison sentence.

Marion Needham Russell, a descendant of the Earl of Kilmorey, was found to be in contempt of court after she refused to return valuable antiques, which she had taken, to the family home.

Yesterday afternoon she voluntarily reported to Kilkeel police station from where she was taken on to Maghaberry Prison to begin her sentence.

The action against Mrs Russell is rooted in a dispute with other members of her family over the future of the family's ancestral home at Mourne Park House and its assets.

The estate is jointly owned by Mrs Russell, her sister Mrs Debonair Norah Needham Horsman, and her brother Philip James Anley.

The two siblings brought their action against Mrs Russell after she removed the heirlooms or, as she described it, one-third the value of the property in the house.

Yesterday, Mrs Russell, who understands she can be returned to prison if she fails to comply with the wishes of the court, stood by her actions and restated her view that she would not be returning the property to the house.
