Windy Ulster To Help Battle Global Warming
Storm-tossed parts of Northern Ireland are to help in the battle against global warming.
The NI Executive Environment Minister, Arlene Foster, has just issued a new draft Planning Guidance referring to wind development in the local landscape.
Ms Foster invited comment on the document that is intended to assist developers to identify appropriate locations for wind turbine and wind farm developments.
"Energy from wind has an important role to play in helping reduce emissions of the harmful greenhouse gases which contribute to global warming," she said.
"We in Northern Ireland are well placed to take advantage of this form of renewable energy, benefiting as we do from one of Europe’s best wind resources."
The Minister went on to say it is vitally important that wind turbines and wind farms are located in the right places and the landscape quality of our most scenic areas is maintained.
"That is why I have issued the new guidance which considers the landscape sensitivities of different parts of Northern Ireland and I am keen to hear the public's views," she added.
The move will also complement the recently published Planning Policy Statement on Renewable Energy, PPS 18, which is currently being consulted upon.
