350 Jobs To Be Lost At Arklow Factory

The Allergan plant in Arklow, Co Wicklow, is set to close with the loss of 350 jobs.

The move comes after the company decided to transfer production to Costa Rica.

Staff at the plant, which manufactures silicone breast implants, were told of the closure at a meeting with management at 8.30 this morning.

Reports suggest that the closure will be phased - the first staff leaving the firm at the end of this year - and the plant closure taking place at the end of 2009.

The plant has been operating in Arklow since 1989 when it was opened by global healthcare company Inamed.

Allergan acquired Inamed in 2006 for $3.2 billion.

Allergan has a subsidiary in Westport, Co Mayo, Allergan Pharmaceuticals Ireland. It manufactures a range of pharmaceutical and biological products, but it is understood that today's announcement does not impact on this plan.

Management and unions are due to hold further meetings later this morning.
