Derry Shirt Factory Hit By Job Losses
The local 'rag trade' is suffering again as some 85 jobs are now expected to be lost at a shirt factory in the Waterside area of Londonderry.
Gareth Scott from the trade union Unite has described news that the workforce at Glenadden Shirts on the city's Trench Road is to be reduced to 30 as a "devastating blow".
"They were possibly expecting an announcement for a small number of redundancies," said the trade unionist.
"But this is a major announcement with major redundancies.
"It will bring the staffing level down from 115 to 30, so it's major downsizing and obviously it's come as a major shock to staff."
The overall textile industry has been in decline for decades in Northern Ireland with the industry being a mere shadow of the former commercial giant it once was - as low paid workers in the Far East are used to manufacture a range of textile products.
Most recently, there were fresh job losses in a County Down yarn and fibre manufacturer with over 100 workers at Regency Spinning in Newtownards made redundant.
