Man charged after loyalists open fire on police

A 30-year-old man has been arrested after police vehicles were fired on in north Belfast last night.

Three police vehicles – with eight officers on board – were hit by gunfire after responding to reports of serious disturbances in the staunchly loyalist Westland Road area of north Belfast.

The shooting is being treated by police as attempted murder.

A 34-year-old man, a 35-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy were also arrested in connection with the disturbances.

Meanwhile, fingers were being pointed on both sections of the community after petrol bombs were thrown in east Belfast.

DUP councillor Ruth Patterson said homes on the mainly Protestant Cluan Place were attacked with petrol bombs and other objects.

However, Sinn Fein councillor Joe O'Donnell claimed that houses in the neighbouring Short Strand were first to come under attack by petrol bombers.

No injuries were reported during either incidents.
