Inquiry Net Widens Over 'Flawed' Omagh Bomb Investigation

Controversy continues on the flawed police investigation into the horrific Omagh bombing.

The latest move sees the NI Police Ombudsman extending his inquiry beyond direct investigation of the named two officers who admitted lying during the failed Omagh bomb trial.

Now, the watchdog will examine other serious concerns raised by trial judge, Mr Justice Weir last month – to include the conduct of other officers.

During the high profile court action, the judge said the officers had attempted to mislead the court in a "deliberate and calculated deception".

These 'deceptions' were cited last month when the accused, Sean Hoey, was cleared of 58 charges, including the murders of 29 people in the 1998 IRA attack.

PSNI Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde confirmed the two officers under investigation following the trial were still on duty with the police.

Subsequently however, the police said they had reviewed the positions of the named officers, Det Chief Inspector Philip Marshall and Constable Fiona Cooper and said that one of the officers has been moved to perform other duties in line with a recommendation from the ombudsman.

The NI Policing Board has also pledged an independent review of all investigations into the bombing.

The Omagh bombing was one of the worst atrocities of Northern Ireland's Troubles.

Weekend Bomb Attacks Condemned
A spate of bomb attacks over the weekend has been condemned by the First and deputy First Minister and parties across the political spectrum. A police patrol was attacked with a pipe bomb in County Tyrone on Saturday. A security alert began in the Ballycolman estate, Strabane, at about 20:25, following news that something had been thrown at police.

Ardoyne Bomb Attack Targets Police
A bomb attack in north Belfast on Tuesday evening has been described as "a blatant attempt to kill or seriously injure police officers". Chief Inspector Andrew Freeburn said those who planted the bomb "showed callous disregard for the safety of the local community and police officers serving this community.

Omagh Bomb Officers Cleared
There will be no criminal action taken against two PSNI officers incorrectly accused of lying during the Omagh bomb trial by the judge. After news that they have been effectively cleared, there has been a call for an official apology. DUP Policing Board member Ian Paisley Jnr believes both officers now deserve an apology.

Blaze Dramas Unfold
An investigation is being carried out to establish the cause of the three fires, including one where pensioners had to be evacuated from their homes - as well as a petrol bomb attack. A row of terraced houses under construction at Milltown Street in Dungannon sustained extensive damage in the fire which was reported at 7.10am on Saturday.
