Quit Smoking Campaign Underway

A New Year television campaign has been launched to help smokers kick their habit.

With three-quarters of smokers in Northern Ireland saying they want to quit and as New Year resolutions are being planned, the NI Health Protection Agency feels it is a good time to encourage people to make 2008 the year they give up.

A series of adverts ran from the end of December to 6 January to promote the Smokers' Helpline.

The Helpline is a free service staffed by trained counsellors offering support, information and advice, as well as directing smokers to their local stop smoking support service.

Nicky McKee, Senior Manager for Public Health at the HPA, said: "Through this campaign we very much want to encourage those who see the New Year as their chance to make a fresh start by stopping smoking.

"There is a lot of support available for smokers who want to give up.

"Hopefully through the Smokers' Helpline they will find something that suits them."

"The advantages to stopping smoking greatly outweigh any perceived disadvantages, so make 2008 the year you quit and make an enormous impact on your life."
