Keep Card Details Secret
The police have warned credit card holders about a scam carried out by criminals posing as security personnel from the card provider.
In the fraud attempts, the victim is asked to verify a particular payment on their account and is asked to read out the three-digit security code on the back of the card.
When that is done, the caller says the information has helped put a stop to a fraudulent charge.
However, the security code is instead used to obtain money from the account.
The first that the cardholder will know is when the charge appears on their next statement.
A police spokesman said: "Your bank will never ask you to read numbers from your card - after all, it issued the card in the first place so already knows the numbers."
