Tenth Road Death: Child Named
Ten people have been killed on the roads in Ireland so far this month.
The latest, a young boy, was named as 12-year-old Peter White from Valencia Way North in Newtownards.
He died after being hit by a car on the main Belfast to Newtownards dual carriageway last night about 6.30pm.
His death is the eighth in Northern Ireland since the weekend and along with two road deaths in the Irish Republic in the last 48 hours, totals 10 in just the first week of the month.
Meanwhile, a woman is critical in the Royal Victoria Hospital after suffering head injuries in an accident on the Carnmoney Road North in Newtownabbey.
And in Co Fermanagh, four people have been injured in a collision on the main Newtownbutler to Lisnaskea road. They are understood to be stable.
There was widespread traffic chaos last night in and around Belfast and on the approaches to Newtownards following closure of the road after the tragedy, which was exacerbated by larger than normal volumes of pre-Christmas traffic and the poor weather.
Local Ulster Unionist MLA, David McNarry said it would be hard for the community to take in what had happened.
"It is tragic. Our thoughts are with the boy's family and with the driver as well," the Strangford Assembly member said, who also today called for all drivers to take greater care, and to remember that when they step into a car they are in fact taking control of a potentially lethal 'weapon'.
