Cowardly Attacker Who Terrifies His Mother Is Jailed
A savage and cowardly attack by a man who beat-up his own mother has led to a jail term.
A judge at Londonderry Crown Court told Gerald McKinney, 25, that the attack - when he hit her up to nine times in the eye, face and body - was both cowardly and savage, and jailed McKinney for two years.
McKinney, from Abercorn Road in Derry, attacked his mother in her home in Ballymagroarty in February this year.
The court was told that the accused had a substantial criminal record for violence and at the time of the attack he was released on licence.
However, he has been in custody since two days after the incident and could be released as early as next February.
The court also heard the accused's mother is frightened of him and concerned he will re-offend.
During the short hearing on Monday, McKinney made several interruptions from the dock and was warned by Judge Phillip Babington he would be taken from the court if he did not keep quiet.

Fire Escapes
There have been two lucky escapes in separate fires in the North West. A mother whose home in Londonderry was targeted in an arson attack has said her family is lucky to be alive. The Fire and Rescue Service were called to the property in the Glen Estate at about 3am on Sunday.

Mother And Son Escape Injury Following Petrol Bomb Attack
A mother and her son have escaped injury after a petrol bomb attack at a house in Dungannon, Co Tyrone. The attack happened in the Springdale area in the early hours of Thursday morning, 11 January. The device was thrown at a window and caught fire outside the property. The woman extinguished the fire herself.

Mother And Son Escape Arson Attack
A deliberate fire in a mid terrace house on Walmer Street in the early hours of yesterday morning is being investigated by the police. At the time there were two persons in the property, a 30-year-old woman and her young son, 11. Both managed to escape the house unharmed.
