Two Drown In Car Pier Plunge
As Northern Ireland was reeling from news of six tragic deaths on the roads, a car has plunged into the sea in Galway, killing two men inside - although a third man had a miraculous escape.
The pair who drowned were professional fishermen whose car apparently ran off a pier.
The men are believed to be from Lithuania. Their car fell into the sea at Rossaveal Harbour in County Galway on Sunday night at about 10pm.
The third man who was in the car when it went off the harbour, escaped through the vehicle's sun roof.
The men were all members of the crew of a fishing boat operating out of Rossaveal - the harbour for the Aran Islands.
They had only bought the second-hand car at the weekend and were driving it on the pier when the accident happened.
The car went over a low protective barrier and plunged into about 10 metres of water.
The man who escaped was a back seat passenger and managed to escape through the sun roof and was able to swim to safety. He is said to be deeply traumatised by the accident.
Although the alarm was raised quickly, the two men, who were trapped inside the submerged car, died before a rescue attempt could be made.
Garda sub-aqua divers arrived at the scene at 3am and recovered their bodies.
