Limavady Girl Found Dead Is Named
Rural Limavady is reeling today with news of the violent death of a young girl in the town.
PSNI detectives are investigating the death of the 17-year-old, whose body was found in the Blackburn Path area of the town, at about 10.30pm on Wednesday night.
The girl has been named locally as Wendy McAteer. It is not yet known how she was killed, but police have appealed "to witnesses to an assault".
Miss McAteer is believed to be a past pupil of St Mary's High School.
East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell says local people were "shocked" by the news.
"Any person that dies as a result of some form of incident is to be regretted, and I'm sure the sympathies of everyone will go out to the family," he said.
Police have cordoned off the area and forensic experts are in attendance.
The girl's body was removed from the scene at approximately 11am on Thursday.
Police have asked anyone who was in the vicinity of Blackburn Path or Irish Green Street on Wednesday night and witnessed an assault to contact them.
They said that a 30-year-old man has been arrested and is currently helping police with their enquiries.
Meanwhile, another teenager has been killed, this time in Limerick where a murder investigation looks likely to be starting soon following the discovery of a teenager's body in a local park.
Gardai officers are investigating the violent death of the teenager who was discovered by a passer-by on a green area in O'Malley Park at the rear of Mountain View and Galtee Drive, near Galvone Industrial Estate, at around 10.30am.
