Man charged with attempted murder following knife attack

An 18-year-old man has appeared in court today charged with the attempted murder of a woman in Co Antrim at the weekend.

Christopher Kyle Houston, from Shetland Gardens in Ballymena, is accused of attacking the 31-year-old woman outside the Dunluce Medical Centre in Portrush early on Saturday morning.

The woman needed around 40 stitches to wounds on her head, face and neck. Some of the lacerations measured 27 centimetres in length and were so severe that her cheekbone was visible.

The woman had been returning home from a pub at about 1.30am on Saturday morning when she became aware of someone following her.

Police revealed that, when she reached an area of playing fields, she was struck from behind by a sharp object. The woman was then slashed repeatedly across the face and head.

A passer-by found the woman a short time afterwards and raised the alarm.

Monday's sitting of Coleraine Magistrates Court heard the defendant had been interviewed by police in the town and made no reply when the charge was put to him.

A police officer told the court he believed he could connect the teenager to the charge.

Mr Houston was remanded in custody.
