Hospital Walk-Out In New Nipsa Dispute
There’s double trouble in store as hospital workers in Londonderry walk out in a row over workload.
On top of a continuing Nipsa-backed classroom assistants’ strike across Northern Ireland – with staff returning to the picket lines this morning – the new development adds pressure in both sectors.
This morning, more than 70 medical secretaries are involved in fresh strike action at Altnagelvin Hospital, which union Nipsa said was over a ban on overtime.
Nipsa classroom assistants across Northern Ireland are already on the second of a series of two-day strikes, which are due to last until at least Christmas with their ongoing dispute being over pay and conditions.
Last week, some schools – especially the special schools sector - organised a rota system to accommodate high risk pupils and while assistants have apologised to parents they say that they are determined to continue with the action.
Last month, an earlier 10-day strike by classroom assistants shut more than half of special schools.
Subsequent talks with employers at the Labour Relations Agency failed.

The run up to Christmas will be marked by a fresh phase of walkouts by local classroom assistants who are to resume their strike action next week. The Nipsa union members will be out on picket lines two days a week until Christmas, and many special schools will be affected.

Around 3,000 classroom assistants who are members of the public service union NIPSA began an all-out strike today. They have said they will not return to work until a new offer is made by employers, and the strike is likely to cause disruption in hundreds of schools.
