Antrim Gun Attack Is Condemned

A number of shots were fired at a house and a car in Bush Manor, a private development near Antrim town's Steeple estate at the weekend.

Councillors have condemned the attack which left two people in the property at the time of the attack on Saturday unhurt.

Although police are still working to establish a motive for the attack, the deputy mayor of Antrim, Oran Keenan, said that tensions have being heightened in the last few months in the Steeple area.

"There have been a few incidents of petrol bombings, cars and houses being burned.

"It is disappointing to see that there are still people who are prepared to fire indiscriminately into houses. It's certainly something we thought we had got rid of and we wouldn't want to see it happening again," he said.

Councillor John Smyth, who lives in the Steeple area, said there were many Polish families where the attack took place.

"This is a disgraceful attack, it cannot be tolerated," he said.

"Thankfully no-one was hurt."

Another councillor, Brian Graham, also urged those with information on the incident to contact police.

"We have a lot of businesses coming to Antrim now. We don't want to give it a bad image when we're trying to rejuvenate the town centre," he said.

Anyone with information on the attack is asked to contact police at Antrim on 0845 600 8000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
