Formula 1 star Irvine axed by Jaguar

Northern Ireland's Formula 1 star Eddie Irvine has been axed by Jaguar.

The Conlig man was informed of the decision by team principal Niki Lauda earlier today. His Jaguar team-mate Pedro de la Rosa has also been dropped from the troubled Grand Prix team owned by Ford.

According to a statement issued today by Jaguar they two drivers have been replaced "with immediate effect" by Australian Mark Webber and Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia.

The decision is not a surprising one given that both Irvine and de la Rosa have under achieved during their time at Jaguar and at times Irvine was scathing about the team's performance this season.

However, Irvine, who leaves after three seasons at Jaguar, has scored all of the team's eight championship points in 2002.

The Ulsterman had no comment to make on his intentions for next year, though several sources have said he will more than likely join Jordan for whom Fast Eddie drove in 1994-1995.

He did, however, warn that Jaguar should be worried about fielding two such "inexperienced drivers" in next season's races.
