Ratepayers Foot The Bill At City Of Derry Airport

Safety concerns that temporarily closed City of Derry airport earlier this year could cost local ratepayers as much as £3m.

Foyle MLA, William Hay, said the money was for renovations ordered after runway and other problems led to a four-day closure of the airport.

He has called for private sector intervention to help cover the costs: "The issue we have, as councillors and as a council, is whether this is something we can sustain in the long term," he said.

"I don't think it is and I think we have to be honest with the ratepayers. I think we have got to get the airport into a position where we can totally lift the burden off the ratepayers."

Ryanair, the Irish airline, which is soon to add Belfast to its list of destinations, is a major client of the regional airport, and regarded as having a significant interest in the airport’s future.
