Court told of UDA feuding

Inter-factional feuding among loyalist paramilitaries has led to five men appearing in court on serious charges, including attempted murder.

Monday’s court appearances followed large-scale weekend trouble in Carrickfergus when Ulster Defence Association (UDA) supporters are said to have tried to kill the alleged leader of a rival faction.

The claim was made as five men from the town aged between 22 and 44 appeared in Belfast Magistrates Court.

Two of them face an attempted murder charge. Other charges include assault, affray, possession of a drug and having an offensive weapon.

The men denied the charges and claim they were attacked. Bail was refused.
