Hammer Horror Hospitalises Pensioner
An elderly shop customer is in hospital with serious head injuries after being beaten in a frenzied hammer attack in Co Armagh.
The 84-year-old local man, Robert Gamble, was viciously assaulted by a man who went on the rampage with two hammers, smashing up cars and wrecking the garage shop before turning on the pensioner who was unfortunate enough to be in the store.
The incident happened on the forecourt of Dewarts Filling Station at Main Street, Waringstown shortly after 8pm on Monday night.
The victim was taken to Craigavon Area Hospital where his daughter said that Mr Gamble is now 'recovering well' despite having suffering what she described as a 'bad wound' to the left side of his head.
During the incident the assailant forced his way into the shop, terrorised staff and caused extensive damage inside, then attacked cars, before he launched the brutal assault on the elderly man.
Police arrested a man also from the locality close to the scene soon afterwards. He remains in custody where he is helping with PSNI enquiries about the attack and the damage at the forecourt and shop.
