CITB scoops regional win in training awards

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) for Northern Ireland is one of the 29 Northern Ireland regional winners in this year’s National Training Awards Competition.

Congratulating the CITB on having scooped a regional award for the third time in the last four years of entering the prestigious competition, Employment and Learning Minister, Jane Kennedy said: “The 2002 National Training Awards Competition has again highlighted the increased drive for training excellence among Northern Ireland companies, organisations and individuals.

"The continued interest from all sectors demonstrates not only the impetus to be the best but national recognition that we are the best. The CITB has proved again that training can bring substantial rewards, not just to the organisation but the industry that it serves.”

Established in 1964 and based near Crumlin, County Antrim, the Construction Industry Training Board for Northern Ireland is charged with encouraging the training of people employed in or seeking employment in the construction industry. Funded by a levy on contractors, the Board recognised the need to improve training and enhance its reputation with the industry following a review of its services in 1998.

Brian McMullen, a Regional Manager within the Board’s Training and Advisory Service, commented: “The resulting customer feedback from the review provided a clear indicator that our Training Advisory Service needed to adopt an outreach mode and that shop window personnel needed to have recognised national qualifications to compete in the modern economy.

“Over 20 people in our organisation have now acquired national qualifications and the CITB senior management has placed the training and development of our Training Advisory Service staff at the heart of all our operations. The result has been a favourable response from levy payers and a positive response from our staff to their contribution to the role and aims of the organisation. “
