Classroom Assistants Commence Three-Day Strike
Classroom Assistants across Northern Ireland will commence a three-day strike today after the latest proposals over pay from management were rejected.
The Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance (NIPSA) trade union was offered a new deal on Friday, as a result of a series of meetings with employers last week.
Under the new deal, a £15 million one-off payment would be offered to buy out the historical 32.5 hour contract of the Assistants.
The Union said the deal was no different than that offered by management in June and that the proposals failed to address the key issues behind the dispute.
An all-out strike is planned from next Monday October 8 if agreement is not reached.
Many special schools are expected to close today as around 3,000 classroom assistants take industrial action.
The union is planning all out strike from next Monday, 8 October.
The other union to which classroom assistants belong Unison, was to have held a ballot on action, but this was called off following a meeting of representatives.
