Assembly members wages cut

The Northern Ireland Secretary of State Paul Murphy has ordered a pay cut for Assembly members.

The 108 members of the Stormont Assembly are paid around £41,000 a year, but from next week that will be cut by £10,000.

However, they will keep their allowances of £48,000 to run their constituency offices.

The ten departmental ministers will see their salaries cut by more than £34,000 and will involve the former first minister David Trimble and deputy first minister Mark Durkan losing more than £66,000.

The new salary scales will come into effect from next week Mr Murphy confirmed.

"I fully expect that Assembly Members, as elected representatives, will continue to represent their constituents' interests and it is right that they should receive the appropriate salary for doing so."

He added: "This Government remains totally committed to the full implementation of the Agreement. It has already brought great benefits to the people of Northern Ireland and I would hope very much, bearing this in mind that we will make steady progress towards a restoration of power."

Speaker of the Assembly Lord Alderdice will remain in office but his salary will be reduced from £77,562 to £48,850.
