Anti-Abortion Group Prepares For Debate

The anti-abortion group Precious Life has placed adverts in three Northern Ireland newspapers today to urge members of the assembly to back a motion opposing abortions.

The group want the assembly to scrap drafted guidelines on abortions and abandon any attempts to make abortion more widely available in Northern Ireland.

The guidelines were issued by the Department of Health in January after a judicial review was brought by the Family Planning Association (FPA) to offer clinical guidance to health professionals over circumstances where terminations can take place.

Precious Life believes that the guidelines will change how the law is interpreted and would effectively legalise abortion "through the back door".

Pregnancy terminations in Northern Ireland are only allowed when the expectant mother's life is at risk or causes long-term threat to her physical or mental health.

The motion could be debated at any time within the next few weeks.
