Counterfeit goods seized at local markets

Police have seized counterfeit goods worth an estimated £40,000 at markets over the weekend.

At Nutt's Corner market on Sunday police seized counterfeit goods worth an estimated £31,000, including music CDs, computer games, videos and DVDs.

Police in Newcastle, Co Down, also recovered a quantity of counterfeit goods with a street value put at £9,000 at Dundrum market. The haul included CDs, DVDs and videos.

Last week police in Dungannon put on display counterfeit goods seized during a major crackdown on fraudsters and counterfeiters in the Dungannon and south Tyrone area.

The estimated value of the haul was put at £50,000 and included 3,000 music and Play Station CDs, 2,500 video tapes and DVDs. Police also confiscated equipment that could be used for making counterfeit recordings.

Dungannon and South Tyrone District Commander, Chief Superintendent Edward Graham, said: "I believe that we have quite literally stopped in its tracks a very lucrative operation for the counterfeiters. I would warn these people that in the lead up to Christmas there will be an increase in police operations against those involved in lining their pockets at the expense of others."

The Dungannon haul followed the discovery by police of a major counterfeiting operation in which television monitors, video recorders and over 600 videotapes were seized in the Ballysaggart area.
