Dispute Over Omagh Memorial
A planned memorial to victims of the Omagh bombing has faced fresh controversy over the inscription for the victims' families.
Plans for the memorial were announced today by Omagh District Council, but it is understood that the wording on the plaque is still to be agreed.
Michael Gallagher, whose son Aidan was killed in the bombing, is in dispute with Omagh District Council, over the wording of the plaque. Relatives of the victims are insisting that the memorial must represent the facts of the atrocity.
Mr Gallagher told UTV that: "There can be no ambiguity over what happened on August 15 1998, and no dancing around words can distract from the truth."
It is understood that the council has appointed an independent mediator in order to reach an agreement.
The design will be completed by the 10th anniversary of the Real IRA bomb, which exploded in 1998, killing 29 people, including a woman pregnant with twins.
