Downpatrick Shop Fire 'Suspicious'

Police are treating a fire which caused severe damage to a section of a County Down shopping mall as suspicious.

The fire at the Grove Shopping Centre in Downpatrick caused extensive damage to one store and spread to three adjacent shops. Six appliances and over 40 firefighters were at the scene for three hours before the fire was brought under control.

It is thought that the fire, which was discovered at around 4.20am, broke out in the roof of the centre.

Some of the shops reopened today, but it will be some time before the badly damaged stores can re-open.

Commenting on the suspected arson attack, South Down MP Eddie McGrady said it was "utterly deplorable."

Police have appealed for any witnesses.
