Three police injured in south Belfast riot

Three police officers have been injured and six people arrested after a disturbance in south Belfast in the early hours of this morning.

The incident occurred shortly after 1am when police responded to reports of an assault in University Street. An angry crowd gathered in the area, which later grew to around 250 as police back up units arrived on the scene.

Trouble flared as the police attempted to disperse the crowd, and a hard core of about 60 people threw bottles and stones at police lines.

The SDLP assembly member for South Belfast Alasdair McDonnell condemned the rioting as "totally unacceptable". He added that many residents were "upset" and "angry" by the incident.

Mr McDonnell said: "People are entitled to live in peace and safety in their own homes. Those how took part in the disturbances last night must be condemned by all right-thinking people.

"This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable, and could easily have led to the death or serious injury of someone."
