Colombia 3 campaign 'disturbed' over withdrawals

The Bring Them Home campaign has said that it is "disturbed and deeply disappointed" following news that three members of the Oireachtas have pulled out of a trip to monitor the trial of the 'Colombia Three'.

Last week it was announced that Senator Paul Bradford (Fine Gael), TD John Curran (Fianna Fáil), TD Sean Crowe (Sinn Fein), TD Finian McGrath (Independent), and Senator Mary White (Fianna Fail) would leave for Colombia to act as monitors at the trial in Bogota. However, it has since been reported that three of that group have pulled out.

A spokesperson for the Bring Home Campaign, Catriona Ruane, said: "We are disturbed and deeply disappointed that three of the public representatives felt obliged to withdraw from the delegation due to the pressure exerted on them by some of their colleagues.

"As the families of the three men we requested that they visit the men purely on humanitarian grounds and in their capacity as public representatives."

Two Men Attacked With Baseball Bats In Co Antrim
Two 18-year-old men have been attacked with baseball bats in Whitehead, Co Antrim. The victims were closing premises in the Balmoral Avenue area at around 8.30pm on Tuesday, 04 October when three men assaulted them. Both men were treated in hospital for their injuries. One has been discharged, and the other remains in hospital.

Man Pleads Guilty To Being Getaway Driver In North Belfast Robberies
A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to seven and half years after pleading guilty to being involved as a getaway driver in two robberies. Ross Thompson will serve three years and nine months in custody, with the remaining three years and nine months on licence.
