Housebuilding on the up in Northern Ireland

The latest statistics from the National House Building Council (NHBC) have revealed that applications to build new homes in Northern Ireland have risen by an average of 21% in October 2002, in comparison with figures for the same period last year.

However, not every region in the province reported such a significant increase in registrations, with Co Armagh experiencing a 19% drop, and counties Tyrone and Down only exhibiting a 3% and 8% rise in registrations respectively.

However, in the more buoyant regions, Co Antrim saw a 17% increase, while Co Fermanagh showed a rise of 63% and Londonderry reported a 110% increase in registrations.

Overall, the UK picture shows UK applications to build new homes as decreasing by 6%.

Imtiaz Farookhi, Chief Executive of NHBC, said: "The decline in the number of NHBC registrations for October is not a sign that the demand for new homes is slowing down, more a reflection of the exceptional number of registrations in October 2001. Overall, demand for new homes as not weakened."
