Minister opens £3 million schools' facilities

NIO minister Jane Kennedy has today visited new school accommodation facilities representing a total investment of over £3 million at a school in Omagh and one in Cookstown.

Ms Kennedy officially opened a new Technology and Design block and four refurbished science laboratories at Cookstown High School, which were provided under the Department of Education’s Specialist Accommodation Programme.

Ms Kennedy said: “This provision is excellently equipped to help the school to deliver an important aspect of the curriculum well into this new millennium."

The minister said that since the establishment of the Specialist Accommodation Programme in 1989, £185 million has been spent to provide suitable Technology and Design, Science and ICT accommodation for schools in Northern Ireland.

Earlier in the day, the Minister also visited St Mary’s Primary School, Killyclogher, Omagh. At St Mary’s she toured the school's new £2 million accommodation to be officially opened next month.

During the visit, Ms Kennedy said: “I would like to congratulate all those involved in providing this magnificent new accommodation. This new school building and its facilities will bring enriched learning opportunities which its pupils so rightly deserve.”
