US envoy briefs NI business leaders
The United States special envoy to Northern Ireland, Richard Haass, has urged business and community leaders to use their influence to encourage Northern Ireland politicians to stay on the course towards peace.
Mr Haass made the comment during a breakfast meeting of business leaders in Belfast this morning.
In his first visit to Northern Ireland as ambassador since the suspension of political institutions on October 14, Mr Haass called on all paramilitary groups to end their violent ways.
Last month, the special envoy said the IRA and Northern Ireland's other paramilitary groups "must go out of business".
In his brief breakfast meeting he also said he looked forward to the day when the most contentious issues in politics in Northern Ireland were ones related to health and education.
Later in the day Mr Haass met members of the SDLP, Sinn Fein and the DUP. This followed yesterday's talks with the PSNI chief constable, Hugh Orde and members of the Ulster Unionist Party.
