Ministers launch €179m Interreg IIIA programme

Ministers from Northern Ireland and the Republic have launched the INTERREG IIIA Programme, one of the European Union's Community Initiatives.

The programme, which targets all disadvantaged border areas throughout the EU and tackles the social and economic disadvantage arising from the existence of a border, will be distributing €179 million over the next few years.

Speaking at the launch in Newry, John McKinney, Chief Executive of the Special EU Programmes Body, which is the Managing Authority for INTERREG, said: “INTERREG III, which follows on from INTERREG I and II will give people opportunities and grant assistance to help them improve their economy and society.

“One of the most important aspects of the INTERREG Programme is the partnership that it creates and encourages. The funds will be distributed through a number of organizations, including government departments working alongside local partnerships on both sides of the border.”

Jack O’Connor, Director of Community Initiatives, SEUPB, who is based in Monaghan, added: “Over the past 11 years, INTERREG I and II have contributed to rebuilding the Border Region, on both sides of the border.

“These new monies will enable people and organizations on both sides of the border to continue the work of rejuvenating their communities and we greatly welcome this aid that the European Community has committed.

“We look forward to working with all groups, government departments and partnerships as they deliver funds from this much appreciated programme.”

INTERREG IIIA will be directed at three priority areas designed to create jobs, improve economic competitiveness, formulate development plans and promote equal opportunities for men and women in border areas.
