NIW Invests £1million In Infrastructure For The Future

Northern Ireland Water (NIW) has stated that they are investing £1million a day upgrading Northern Ireland’s water and sewerage infrastructure.

The company says that expenditure has increased tenfold since 2000/01 when approximately £12 million was invested, compared to some £122 million in the last financial year.

The funds are being spent on a number of major projects, to ensure that the country’s sewers systems are upgraded and repaired, and an investment of £174 million by 2010 in water treatment, storage and mains improvements will ensure a higher quality of water by tap.

However, with a mandate to deliver a 21st century infrastructure, which includes the laying of over 1200km of water mains, it has been estimated that Northern Ireland Water will require total investment of over £3 billion by 2020.

Katharine Bryan, Chief Executive of NIW explained: “We are well underway with a major capital investment programme to improve water and wastewater treatment facilities and increase our levels of compliance. The Belfast Sewers Projects is one example of this work. We are investing over £100 million in this project alone."
