Ramraider shot by police in Newry
A man has been shot and six police officers injured after a ramraider went on the rampage in Newry in the early hours of this morning.
Previous to the shooting, there were three ram raid incidents – the first of which occurred at a tool-hire premises in Carnbane Industrial Estate shortly after 1am. About an hour later, an electrical goods shop at Edward Street was ram raided and a short time later a newsagents in William Street was targeted.
Then at around 2.30am, police attempted to stop a car at Watsons Road. It reversed away and crashed into a wall before driving toward one of the officers pinning him against a wall.
The officer fired a number of shots and the vehicle drove off toward Martins Lane where it rammed another police vehicle before stopping. The driver was arrested and it was found that he had sustained a gunshot wound to his arm.
Six police officers were injured during attempts to stop the car.
The Police Ombudsman's office has been informed of the incident

The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Hamill Inquiry Witnesses To Be Screened
The Robert Hamill Inquiry has ruled that witnesses who are serving or retired police officers may give their evidence from behind a screen. However, they will not be granted full anonymity. This ruling has been made in response to applications for such screening on behalf of a number of former or still serving police officers due to give evidence.
