NI passenger numbers soar for easyJet

Northern Ireland gave out-going easyJet chairman Stelios Haji-Ioannou a farewell to remember with news that the airline's passenger numbers were up by over 100% on last year.

Over the year to September 2002 easyJet's Belfast operations at Aldergrove carried almost 2.5 million passengers to Luton, Stanstead, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bristol and Amsterdam – one-fifth of easyJet's overall passenger numbers.

Passenger numbers were also aided by the airline's acquisition of rival airline, Go, in August.

The airline also revealed that the average price for passengers travelling on an easyJet flight from its Belfast operations dropped 18% to just £28.

The figures were released as the no-frills airline posted record profits up 78% to £71.6 million for the year.
