County Down Man Killed In Dinghy Accident

A 48-year-old County Down man has been killed in a dinghy accident off the North Wales coast.

Timothy Atkinson, a retired police officer from Banbridge, was taking part in the Laser 4000 Nationals at South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club near Abersoch when his dinghy capsized and he is thought to have become trapped.

Another crew member on the dinghy survived the incident on Monday afternoon and was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

Organisers of the event have decided to continue with the dinghy championship and a minute’s silence was held at 10.00am and a black flag was raised as a mark of respect.

North Wales Police confirmed that Mr Atkinson died at the scene and they and the Coastguard will be holding a joint investigation.
