19-year-old woman rescued from Newry fire

Firefighters have rescued a 19-year-old woman from a fire at a ground floor flat in Newry, County Down.

A number of people, who were on the ground floor of the building at Cleary Crescent at the time of the blaze, had escaped but firefighters wearing breathing apparatus had to rescue the woman.

William Laverty from the Fire and Rescue Service said a working smoke alarm saved the woman's life.

Mr Laverty said that they may have been looking at fatalities, given the ferocity of the fire and the gases it was giving off, only for the smoke alarm alerting people of the fire.

The woman was treated at the scene before being taken to Daisy Hill Hospital for treatment.
