Parades restricted in Downpatrick

A loyalist parade has been banned from entering the predominantly nationalist town of Downpatrick in County Down.

The proposed march on 6th August 2007 by the Red Hand Defenders has had conditions imposed by the Parades Commission this morning.

The Red Hand Defenders flute band will not be allowed to march further than the 30mph signs on the Belfast Road entrance to Downpatrick, however, one band has been given permission to march further.

The Red Hand Defenders, which is organising the march, has been granted permission to parade beyond the speed limit signs to the New Bridge Street roundabout.

At the ruling, the Commission noted that there would be a real threat of damaging Downpatrick community relations if the march proceeded further into the town.
