Housing Executive pays out £140m to landlords

The Housing Executive has announced that Landlords in Northern Ireland are receiving £140m a year from housing benefits.

The Housing Executive is using privately rented property more frequently due to a shortage of social housing.

Sinn Fein’s housing spokesperson Fra McCann expressed his concerns at the amount of money being paid to private landlords. Mr McCann said that people are being forced into the arms of an unregulated private sector and that 70% of the £55m paid out in housing benefits in Belfast in the past year went to private landlords.

The west Belfast assembly member has also pointed out that the rents set by the private sector surpass the Housing Executive rental prices, which is forcing people into debt.

However, Barry Corscadden, chairman of the Landlords’ Association in Northern Ireland, said that the private rental prices are market led.
