Diver airlifted to Isle of Man hospital
A 50-year-old diver has been airlifted to Noble’s Hospital on the Isle of Man after he got into trouble at Guns Island off Ballyhornan, County Down.
The diver was at a depth of 16m when he had to surface too quickly, although the reason for the diver’s emergency call is still unspecified.
Portaferry lifeboat crew Sammy Gordon said that the man was confused and feeling ill.
He has now been flown to the Isle of Man to be treated in a decompression chamber.
Two others had accompanied the diver and just after 8.00pm on Thursday night a mayday message was sent by the dive boat and picked up by the Liverpool coastguard.
The Portaferry lifeboat and paramedics were then sent to the scene and after they assessed the diver and gave him oxygen the Irish Air Corps were asked to airlift the man to the Isle of Man.
On Wednesday another two divers were flown to the same hospital after they got into trouble close to the mouth of Strangford Lough.
