Sprucefield store proposals reconsidered

Proposals for a retail store complex at Sprucefield and 29 adjoining units are being reconsidered following the withdrawal of an application for a John Lewis Store.

The original application for the complex in Lisburn, County Antrim was given the all clear over two years ago before it was later overturned.

A second application was then submitted and once again approved, however, the property developer Westfield have withdrawn the application and it is understood they will submit an alternative proposal.

Fees of £200,000 on legal proceedings alone have cost the taxpayer, but Westfield say the scheme could create up to 2,000 jobs.

Opponents of the scheme include the chambers of commerce in Lisburn and Belfast, and a group of shopping centres including the Rushmere in Craigavon, Bow St Mall in Lisburn and the new Victoria Square in Belfast.
