Rural areas set for cash injection

Rural jobs and lives in Northern Ireland are set for a major financial boost as the European Commission have approved a £500m programme.

A six-year programme is encouraging farmers to become more competitive through diversification and will focus on the creation of new businesses.

The money coming from the EU and the assembly will also place emphasis on the protection of the environment, however, farmers across the province will witness reduction in their support payments from Brussels.

Kenneth Sharkey, President of the Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU), has welcomed the news and he is calling on the Department of Agriculture to ensure that funds will be made accessible easier than they have been in the past.

The UFU President said: “Farmers have found it extremely difficult to access previous rural development funds because there has been so much bureaucracy associated with the scheme. This mistake must not be repeated.”
