Airline angers Glengormley residents
Jet 2.com, a budget airline, has sparked a row with local representatives in Glengormley, County Antrim, after it released a television advert poking fun at local towns and villages.
The advertisement that will be aired from today shows poor weather conditions in Glengormley and invites holidaymakers to flee the ‘dreary’ weather and head for sunnier shores abroad.
The advert has angered local representatives and Alliance Party member David Ford said: “The basic rule is you can poke fun at the place you come from, but for the company to pick out Glengormley when it has no links there is unacceptable. It is inappropriate and it won’t make my constituents want to use the airline."
The advert uses images of ‘depressing’ weather with captions like: "Another great night out in Glengormley?"; "A gentle stroll along Drains Bay?" and "A fun family day at Muff?" to suggest how viewers lives could be different if they took a low-cost flight.
Jet 2.com’s marketing manager Jonathan Alcock said: "The concept of the campaign is to show that you can jet off abroad from as little as £14.99, i.e. the price of a meal, or a new shirt, and escape the miserable British weather for glorious sun or a great city break and we didn’t need to use any post-filming computer wizardry to help with the weather scenes!"
The TV campaign will begin today and run for two weeks.
