First Minister condemns loyalist clashes
The First Minister of Northern Ireland, Ian Paisley, has condemned the loyalist clashes in Carrickfergus, County Antrim and described the violence as ‘extremely worrying’.
The First Minister said that feuds between so-called loyalists are a grave indictment on their communities and he unreservedly condemned such acts.
During the violence a police officer was shot in the back and has undergone surgery to remove the bullet from his body. The part-time officer was hurt when he intervened in the stand-off between 150 people.
The First Minister has extended his sympathy to the officer.
Another arrest has been made in relation to the serious assault on a civilian, which brings the total number of arrests to six. A 36-year-old man is being questioned in relation to what police are saying is attempted murder.
A police forensic team have been carrying out follow-up investigations on the Castlemara estate.

Politicians Help 'Kick Hate Into Touch'
An innovative campaign, the 'Unite Against Hate' sporting weekend has been launched. Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson and his Junior Minister Gerry Kelly (pictured) joined forces to support the campaign which highlights all forms of hate crime and challenges people here to unite to stop it.

Judge condemns arrest of ex-officer
A retired judge has today condemned the arrest of a Special Branch officer amid allegations of a cover-up in the murder of his daughter. Tom Travers was wounded and his 22-year-old daughter Mary was killed when an IRA gang opened fire at them as they left Mass in St Brigid’s Church in the Malone area in April 1984.

Police Vehicle Contracts Arrest - Man Released
A 54-year-old member of police staff who was arrested in County Antrim as part of ongoing investigations into the awarding of vehicle contracts has been released. The man was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and has been taken to a police station in Belfast for questioning.
