Harrington clinches Open title in play-off
Dubliner, Padraig Harrington clinched the 136th Open Championship at Carnoustie following a four-hole play-off with Sergio Garcia.
In a dramatic finish to the final day, Harrington closed a six shot deficit on the Spaniard to take the lead by one shot, heading into the 18th hole. However, the 35-year-old Irishman shot a double bogey six leaving Garcia with only a par needed to clinch the title but fortunately for Harrington he shot a double bogey five to force the play-off.
Harrington, the first Irishman to win the Open since Fred Daly in 1947, took a two shot lead after the first hole of the play-off and held on for victory by one shot.
Speaking of the dropped shots on the final hole, Harrington said: “I never let myself think I had blown the Open, If I had lost I would have struggled to come back out and be a professional golfer. It meant that much to me. It would have been incredibly hard to take.”
During his winner’s speech Harrington paid tribute to his late father, he said: "I’d like to thank my mum and dad. My dad is not here but I’m sure he is looking down.”
