Graduates struggle to get teaching jobs
The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) has released figures that show almost a third of teachers registered within the last six years are still without teaching jobs.
Just under 27,000 teachers are registered and at least 7,000 of those do not have permanent or temporary employment in teaching. The recent survey shows only two thirds of teachers that are employed and under 30 are doing the jobs that they are qualified to do.
Statistics regarding older staff show that almost 400 teachers over 60 are working and 149 teachers over 65 are still registered to work.
Only 15 in the over 65 category are actually working and the GTCNI say that older teachers have a right to keep on working but it would like to see new graduates being entitled to a year's employment.
Newly graduated teachers in Scotland are already entitled to one year’s employment.
