Newry explosion causes major disruption
A device has exploded near the border outside Newry and Army technical experts have carried out a controlled explosion on a second device.
The alert began on Sunday following reports that two explosive devices were left near the Cloghogue roundabout in the Upper Fathom road area.
The first device went off without causing damage or injuries police have said, although major disruption was caused in the area.
Police Chief Inspector Christine McCullough said: “This was a viable device which was capable of causing death or serious injury. This was the action of someone who has nothing to offer the people of Newry and Mourne."
It is believed that dissident republicans were behind the devices.
During the alert the main Belfast to Dublin railway line closed for a time and the traffic on the arterial road route south was delayed.
All roads have now reopened in the area and the security alert is now over.
