Civil Service sickness costs taxpayers
Absentee rates within the Civil Service have cost taxpayers a staggering £24.5m last year and that figure is expected to rise.
Recent figures have shown that the level of sickness equates to 1,450 employees being off work for a period of 12 months.
Minister of Finance, Peter Robinson, will present a paper to officials at Stormont relating to the problem, which he has said was totally unacceptable and he warned that when more recent figures are released that the figures are likely to rise.
The Executive are likely to be confronted with the problem at its last meeting before the summer break and the Executive is likely to consider the possible re-location of public sector jobs.
The recent tally shows that the sickness level is equivalent to every official within the Arts and Leisure, Department of Culture, Education Department and the Office of the Deputy First Minister being off for a year.
Mr Robinson has claimed that urgent action is needed to resolve the problem and will also be delivering an update on Workplace 2010, a government reform programme which is designed to modernise Civil Service estate and practises.
